What is FLEX?
Flexible Learning at Mammoth High School
The Mammoth Mountain Community Foundation (MMCF) is proud to support programs that give the academic rigor and flexibility that student-athletes need to thrive on snow and in school through a trail-blazing partnership with the Mammoth Unified School District. Mammoth High School offers flexible learning opportunities that combine online coursework with fully credentialed classroom teaching to provide an exceptional, individualized learning experience. Through Independent Study, Concurrent Enrollment, and traditional classes, students will find a unique combination of academics and athletics. We are a fully accredited and professionally staffed program within Mammoth High School that works in conjunction with the Mammoth Mountain Ski and Snowboard Teams. This partnership combines a college prep curriculum with a world-class winter sports program with year-round training.
While the ski and snowboard coaches prepare the athletes for national and international competition, our principal goal is to promote personal growth, social responsibility and independence; attributes that our athletes take into adulthood and their desired career path. Teachers and coaches collaborate to create individual learning and training plans that meet the student’s academic needs and athletic dreams.
Mammoth High School’s proximity to Mammoth Mountain’s Alpine Training Facilities and world-class Half-pipe and Terrain Park make it an ideal educational setting for students pursuing snow-sport endeavors. Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center is within five miles of the school.
What is FLEX?
FLEX is an individualized education program supported by fully credentialed teachers. It is designed for Mammoth High School students training and competing with the Mammoth Mountain Ski/Snowboard Team. This unique program custom tailors a student’s course schedule based on their academic needs, personal goals and training schedule. We accomplish this by offering a combination of online classes, traditional high school classes, and community college classes.
Mammoth High School has a close relationship with Cerro Coso Community College. The college is just a few short blocks from the school and is fully accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Our students have the opportunity to earn college credits while attending high school concurrently. The Mammoth High School counseling staff will guide you to make the right choices as you prepare for life after high school. The MMCF Community Impact Officer is available to support student-athletes with communication to ease the burden created by training and competition schedules. Our curriculum is rigorous; our program is flexible and individualized; and our teachers, coaches, and counselors collaborate closely to deliver unparalleled academic and athletic support.
As part of Mammoth High School, flexible learning students have access to all of the school’s counseling and support services, as well as clubs, athletics, and extracurricular programs. The social benefits of being part of MHS are invaluable. Students are encouraged to take part in all activities, clubs, music, drama, sports teams and everything else the high school offers. Students have access to technology, including wireless internet and printing from school and personal computers. The UC High School Articulation Unit fully approves our core courses and is accepted by the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Flexible learning allows students to pursue an accredited academic plan during the school year. College prep and AP level coursework comprises a comprehensive instructional program for all students to ensure excellence in education.
What do all independent study students have in common? Their personal and academic goals and aspirations can be pursued to the fullest through flexible learning. The options offered through traditional classes, online independent study, and concurrent enrollment allow students to work hard both in and outside the classroom.
Many members of MMSST teams take advantage of the flexibility offered at MHS. MHS teachers and staff work closely with MMSST coaches to ensure kids remain on track in good academic standing while managing training and competition schedules.
